Pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is a medical condition in which one or various organs in the pelvis of a woman, such as the uterus, bladder or rectum, a shift from their normal position and press against the vaginal wall, due to the weakness of the muscles and supporting tissues in the pelvic area. This problem can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms and significantly affect the quality of life of the patient.

Prolapses of Pelvic Organs: Types

Types of prolapse:

Prolapses are classified according to the organ that suffers the decline or fall in the following way:

  • Uterine prolapse:  The uterus descends pushing first the neck and then the body of the uterus.
  • Prolapse of vaginal vault: In this case, the vagina is flipped upside down, with him from the inside out. It is common in women who have removed the uterus.
  • Cystocele:The bladder bulges in the wall of the vagina.
  • Enterocele:  In this type of prolapse, the small intestine and the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) fall between the vagina and the rectum. It is also common in women who were removed the uterus (hysterectomy).
  • Rectocele:  Occurs when the rectum protrudes from the posterior wall of the vagina. This type of prolapse may cause constipation or difficulty at the time to have a bowel movement. It forces the female to position a finger into your vagina and press on the rectum to be able to do the bathroom.
